For many people post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is thought of as a condition that impacts those in the military. But anyone can experience PTSD after a traumatic event, especially if the event felt unpredictable and uncontrollable.

PTSD can also be felt beyond those who went through a traumatic experience. People who witness a trauma or those who deal with emergency situations like paramedics or law enforcement officers can be effected by PTSD. Even friends and family members whose loved one experienced a traumatic event may develop PTSD symptoms.

PTSD is experienced differently from person to person. While symptoms most commonly develop in the hours or days following the event, it can sometimes take weeks, months, or even years before they appear. Sometimes these symptoms seem to appear out of nowhere. Other times symptoms are triggered by something that reminds the person of the original trauma, such as a noise, an image, or a smell.

Common symptoms of PTSD can include:

  • Anger and irritability
  • Guilt, shame, or self-blame
  • Substance abuse
  • Depression and hopelessness
  • Suicidal thoughts and feelings
  • Feeling alienated and alone
  • Physical aches and pains
