It’s normal to worry or feel tense under the pressure of a stressful situation. Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger.
Occasional anxiety is a part of life. In fact, anxiety can help you stay alert and focused, move you to action, and motivate you to solve problems.
But when anxiety is constant and overwhelming, when it interferes with your daily life, when it stops being functional and becomes disabling, productive anxiety can become an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety looks different from person to person. One person may suffer from intense anxiety attacks that strike without warning, while another gets panicky at the thought of social situations.
Despite their different forms, all anxiety disorders have a one thing in common: persistent or severe fear or worry in situations where most people wouldn’t feel threatened.
Emotional symptoms of anxiety, in addition to irrational and excessive
fear and worry, can include:
- Feelings of dread
- Feeling tense and jumpy
- Anticipating the worst
- Watching for signs of danger
- Feeling on edge
- Difficulty concentrating or mind drawing a blank
- Panic attacks or panic disorders
Anxiety can also be more than just a feeling. It can involve physical symptoms such as shortness of breath, muscle tension, headaches and fatigue. These symptoms can be mistaken for a medical illness and anxiety sufferers may visit several doctors before the anxiety disorder itself is discovered.
There are also links between anxiety and depression. Many people with anxiety disorders can also suffer from depression at some point.
At Village Counseling and Wellness we have helped clients of all ages overcome their anxiety.
