Life is full of highs and lows and the feeling of sadness is a natural reaction to our struggles, setbacks, and disappointments. When we feel down the word “depression” is often used, but depression itself is much more than the feeling of unhappiness.
Depression might feel like sadness, but did you know that some depressed people may not feel sad at all? Sometimes depression feels lifeless or sometimes it’s experienced as anger, aggressiveness, and restlessness.
Depression differs from normal sadness in that it takes over your everyday life, interfering with your ability to work, eat, sleep, and interact with others. The feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness can be intense, with little relief.
Depression is experienced differently from person to person, but there are some common signs. It’s important to remember that many of these feelings can be part of life’s normal lows. However, the more symptoms you have, the stronger they are, and the longer they’ve lasted—the more likely it is that you’re dealing with depression.
When these symptoms are overwhelming or become disabling, it’s time to seek help.
